Pregnancy and oral health
Today a patient comes into my clinic for consultation. She indicates that she has lost a tooth in every delivery. It is true that during pregnancy it is important to pay better attention to your (mouth) health. But why this idea, tooth loss in relation to pregnancy?
Due to the hormone changes and an increasing blood flow to the gums, oral problems are lurking during pregnancy. Gum inflammation can develop more quickly. The gums are then red, and blood faster. A bad taste in your mouth can also indicate open inflammation.
If there is not enough and correct polishing, plaque remains. Plaque consists of 80% bacteria. The hormone that is released during pregnancy is a suitable voiding for the rapid growth of the bacteria.
If the inflamed gums are not treated, this very quickly turns into periodontitis, in which the jawbone is also affected at a rapid pace.
Jawbone is the foundation to keep the tooth firm and if it breaks off, the tooth will then be loose or fall out on its own.
Precautionary measures:
- Awareness: brush your teeth 2-3 times a day. If you are nauseous, use a small (children's) toothbrush.
- Go to the dental hygienist/dentist every 2 to 3 months for a dental cleaning.
The focus is on prevention, in order to ultimately not develop complaints and to keep the teeth healthy.
Dentalzorg focuses on preventive care( caring). This prevents a lot discomfort.
